My philosophy is simple - write for yourself, then share it.
I no longer believe in word counts, genre molds, writing guidelines, or taking advice from agents. Hell some of the best poetry in the world makes no sense and never has. Read Lewis Carroll to understand that. Write like your ass is on fire, and then, when you have finished, begin to read and adjust. Not one single word should be edited until your entire work is done. Your natural voice is your best voice. Try it, and feel that freedom for once.
